For a growing shop, yes. A free Gmail address usually reads as unfinished. Customers notice. Switch to email on your own domain before that free address spreads everywhere you show up.
Gmail is a fine product. Plenty of real businesses still use it. The question is not whether Google’s inbox works. It is what the address says when someone gets a quote, a invoice, or a cold outreach from yourbusiness247@gmail.com.
Why do people treat Gmail as unprofessional?
Trust, mostly.
A domain address (you@yourbusiness.com) matches the shop name. A free Gmail address looks like a personal account wearing a business nickname. I have watched people ignore outreach from random Gmails on purpose. Fair or not, that is how a lot of buyers filter.
You can be skilled, insured, and booked out and still look temporary if every public contact line ends in @gmail.com.
Is Gmail okay when I am just starting?
Sometimes, for a week. Not as a plan.
If you are testing an idea and have not claimed a domain yet, personal email is how most people start. The trap is staying there after the business is real: social profiles, Google Business, printed materials, vendor logins. Each one teaches another system that your company lives at that free address.
Changing it later means updating contacts, reprinting, and hoping customers notice the new from-line. Starting with the domain address is cheaper than that cleanup.
What happens if I keep using Gmail for the business?
It spreads.
Gmail lands on Facebook, Instagram, invoices, forms, ads, and sometimes a truck or a yard sign. People save it. Software remembers it. Print locks it in.
That is the snowball. The longer you wait, the more places you have to unwind. Domain plus matching email stops the snowball before it grows.

Do I need a fancy website first?
No. You need the domain and the mailbox. The site can come when you are ready. More on that order: Do I Need a Website Before Business Email?.
Do I have to buy Google Workspace to look professional?
Not necessarily. You need custom-domain email. Workspace is one product that provides it. It is not the only path, and it is often more suite than a solo owner asked for. Details: Do I Need Google Workspace for My Domain?.
